Glossary

The words behind selling online.

Clear, plain-language definitions of the terms that come up when you sell gift cards, tickets, bookings, and memberships — and how each one works on Zillo.

Gift card
A gift card is a prepaid balance a customer buys from a business and gives to someone else to spend later. The recipient redeems it against purchases until the balance runs out or it expires.

Digital gift card
A digital gift card is a gift card delivered electronically — by email or link — instead of as a physical plastic card. It is redeemed using a code or QR rather than a card swipe.
Read the definition →
Service voucher
A service voucher is a prepaid token for a specific service or offer — like a “60-minute massage” or “first cut, $30” — that a customer redeems once at the business that issued it.
Read the definition →
Multi-use voucher
A multi-use voucher (or “punch card”) is a prepaid voucher good for a set number of uses — like a 10-coffee card or a 5-class pass — with one use deducted each time it is redeemed.
Read the definition →
Event ticket
An event ticket is proof of paid admission to a dated event. It is checked at the door — increasingly by scanning a QR code — and is often sold in tiers with a capacity limit.
Read the definition →
Experience booking
An experience booking is a reservation for a scheduled, capacity-limited activity — a class, tour, or session — where the customer chooses an available time slot and pays in advance.
Read the definition →
Membership (recurring billing)
A membership is an ongoing subscription a customer pays on a recurring schedule — monthly or yearly — in exchange for ongoing access, such as gym entry or a club. Billing renews automatically.
Read the definition →
QR redemption
QR redemption is validating a gift card, voucher, ticket, or membership by scanning its QR code at the point of use, which marks it used — or deducts a balance or a single visit — in real time.
Read the definition →
Merchant of record
The merchant of record is the business legally responsible for a transaction with the customer — handling the sale, refunds, chargebacks, and tax on it. On Zillo, that business is you, the seller.
Read the definition →
Stripe Connect
Stripe Connect is Stripe's system for platforms to take payments on behalf of many independent businesses, routing each sale to that business's own account while letting the platform collect a fee.
Read the definition →
Application fee
An application fee is the cut a payments platform collects from each transaction it processes on behalf of a connected business. On Zillo, the application fee is 3% per sale.
